Septic Sludge Stabilization in Artificial Wetland: Performance of Two Filter Bed Compositions (Spanish Edition)

The objective of this project was to evaluate two different filter bed compositions (packings) in a pilot-scale artificial wetland for the treatment of sludge from septic tanks. During the sludge loading period, various loads of sludge from different septic tanks in the state of Morelos, Mexico were applied, and the raw sludge and effluents from the cells (leachates) resulting from percolation were evaluated. Furthermore, after the stabilization process of said sludge, its quality was assessed in accordance with the Mexican standard NOM-004-SEMARNAT-2002, Environmental protection.- Sludge and biosolids. Specifications and maximum permissible limits of contaminants for their use and final disposal. The sludge was evaluated with the intention of using the product as biosolids. The results of the study demonstrate that, when properly operated, artificial wetlands can be a safe and sustainable alternative to the processes of stabilizing residual sludge traditionally used.
